Farm/Island Area Tags (K tags)

These are generally limited-use vehicles for farmers that operate their vehicle on the farm or within 25-miles of the farm and/or residents on islands that have no highway access in Maryland.

FARM AREA VEHICLE: This motor vehicle is owned by a farmer that only operates this vehicle on the farm or on highways within 25-miles of the farm.

  • Raises, grows and produces farm products on a farm of at least 3 acres or more; or
  • Keeps at least 25 hives of bees for the pollination of orchards and farm crops and commercial production of honey.
  • Please note several different types of vehicles may be registered as farm area vehicles.
  • A Maryland Safety Inspection Certificate is not required to register a vehicle as a farm area vehicle.
  • However, if you no longer operate an active farm, it will be necessary for you to return your farm area tags and purchase regular registration.
  • A valid Maryland Safety Inspection Certificate may be required if the inspection was initially waived for the issuance of a farm area tag.

PROOF OF ACTIVE FARMING STATUS: As of April 2014, the MVA requires the farmer to submit current proof of active farming status.  The following documents are acceptable proof:

  • IRS Form 1040 Schedule F “Profit or Loss from Farming.”
  • IRS Form 1040 Schedule C-EZ “Net Profit from Business.”
  • IRS Form 1040 Schedule C “Profit or Loss from Business.”
  • IRS Form 4797 “Sales of Business Property.”
  • IRS Form 1120 “US Corporation Income Tax Return”
  • IRS Form 1120S “US Income Tax Return for an S Corporation”
  • IRS Form 1065 “US Return of Partnership Income”
  • IRS Form 4835 “Farm Rental Income and Expenses”

FORM VR-331 FARM ISLAND TAG APPLICATION

ISLAND VEHICLE: This motor vehicle; other than a golf cart, which is operated exclusively on an island.

  • Is not accessible by a highway;
  • Does not have state maintained highways; and
  • Contains less than 20 miles of highways.
  • A Maryland Safety Inspection Certificate is notrequired to register a vehicle as an island vehicle.
  • However, if you no longer live on an island, it will be necessary for you to return your island tags and purchase regular registration.
  • A valid Maryland Safety Inspection Certificate may be required if the inspection was initially waived for the issuance of an island tag.
