Historic Tags

Historic Vehicle Under 10,000 GVWR

A historic registration may be issued to a vehicle that is 20-calendar years old and older with a GVWR under 10,000 lbs.  Maryland Safety Inspection Certificate is not required to register a historic vehicle.

A Historic Vehicle Under 10,000 GVWR Must

  1. be at least 20-calendar years old;
  2. weigh less than 10,000 GVWR,
  3. only be used in exhibitions, club activities, parades, tours, occasional transportation and similar uses.

A Historic Vehicle Under 10,000 GVWR May Not

  1. have been substantially altered, remodeled or remanufactured from the manufacturers original design,
  2. be used for general daily transportation, or primarily for the transportation of passengers or property on highways.
  3. be used for employment, or
  4. transportation to and from employment or school, or
  5. for commercial purposes.

A Historic Vehicle Under 10,000 GVWR May:

  1. obtain a permanent non-transferrable registration for a one-time fee; if 60-years old and older
  2. display personalized [vanity] tags
  3. display vintage tags; same year tag as the vehicle
  4. One-time fee
  5. 25-years old and older
  6. Historic tag issued; kept in vehicle
  7. Renewal fees still paid

Note:  A trailer does not qualify for historic registration.

Historic Trucks Over 10,000 GVWR

A historic registration may be issued to a vehicle that is 25-calendar years old and older with a GVWR over 10,000 lbs.  Maryland Safety Inspection Certificate is not required to register a historic vehicle.

A Historic Vehicle Over 10,000 GVWR must:

  1. be at least 25-calendar years old or older,
  2. be used only in exhibitions, club activities, parades, tours and similar uses,
  3. be a Truck, Tractor or Motor home as long as the vehicle is 25 calendar years old or older.
  4. be insured by a Historic Vehicle, Show Vehicle, or Antique Vehicle insurance policy.

A historic over 10,000 GVWR Vehicle May Not:

  1. be used for occasional transportation,
  2. be for any commercial transportation of passengers or property on highways
  3. be substantially altered, remodeled or remanufactured from its original design.

A Historic Vehicle Over 10,000 GVWR May:
