New Title, New Tags w/ 2-year Registration
You have purchased or have been given a motor vehicle or trailer; it has passed Maryland Safety Inspection and it’s time to get tags. New Title, New Tags w/ 30 Day RegistrationYou have purchased or have been given a motor vehicle or trailer. Now you need to get your motor vehicle or trailer to an authorized Maryland Safety Inspection station to be inspected. Standard Registration RenewalMarylanders normally register their motor vehicles or trailers for 2-years at a time. The fees are different so please call us or stop by so we can help you determine what your fees are for your motor vehicle or trailer.
New Title w/ ORV DecalAll scooters, mopeds, snow mobiles, ATV's and dirt bikes must be titled in Maryland as of October 1, 2012 [MVA Bulletin D-09-12-09]. A few years later, UTV's were added on May 31, 2017 [MVA Bulletin D-05-17-01]. These are all off-road vehicles and are not required to be Maryland Safety inspected.
Substitute TagsSubstitute tags may be requested when [1] Your vehicle’s original license plates are lost, stolen or damaged and you want to replace them with license plates of the same type; [2] You want standard license plates to replace your Chesapeake Bay, Agriculture, Vanity or organizational license plates; [3] You want to replace standard plates for Chesapeake Bay, Agriculture, Vanity or organizational license plates.
Historic TagsTo be registered as a Historic vehicle, your vehicle must be a passenger vehicle, motorcycle or truck (with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less): be 20 calendar years old or older and must not have been substantially altered, remodeled or remanufactured from the manufacturers original design.
A vehicle registered as Historic cannot be used for general daily transportation, or primarily for the transportation of passengers or property on highways. It can only be used in exhibitions, club activities, parades, tours, occasional transportation and similar uses. They will not be used for employment, transportation to and from employment or school, or for commercial purposes. A trailer does not qualify for historic registration.
If your historic vehicle is 60 years old or older, you may obtain a permanent, non-transferable registration for a one-time fee. Note: A historic motor vehicle 60 years old or older do not qualify for a special registration plates since they require an annual registration fee.
Agricultural TagsThe Agricultural plate fees goes to the Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing educational programs and agricultural literacy statewide [agtagme.com] * 410-939-9030.
Addition of New LiensA lien is a record maintained by the MVA of the debt owed by a vehicle owner to a secured party (lender). A secured party lends the money to the owner and has the power to repossess the vehicle if the owner does not repay the loan.
Removal of Administrative Flag FeeThe MVA may place a flag on your vehicle’s record when requested to do so by an authorized flagging agency. This flag will prevent you from renewing your vehicle’s registration, transferring the vehicle’s license plates, obtaining substitute license plates or obtaining a duplicate registration card until the flag fees and/or administrative flag fees are paid in full.

You have purchased or have been given a motor vehicle or trailer; it has passed Maryland Safety Inspection and you have tags to transfer to your motor vehicle or trailer. The MVA will collect excise tax, new certificate of title fee and depending on the registration-time remaining on the tags being transferred; that will determine whether a renewal is performed or just a transfer fee is paid. New Title OnlyYou have purchased or have been given a motor vehicle or trailer. You do not want to put tags on the vehicle at this time. The MVA will collect excise tax and new certificate of title fee. We de-coded the information provided on the MVA website below for your convenience.
Tag ReturnMaryland law requires that you must return your license plates and get an MVA receipt before you cancel your vehicle or trailers insurance. A fine of $150 for the first month and $7 per day may be imposed until the issue is resolved. And, under certain circumstances you may be eligible for a partial refund.
Duplicate TitleYou may request a duplicate certificate of title if your original title has been lost, destroyed, altered, or mutilated. You may also request a duplicate title if the lien on the vehicle has been paid-off, or if the title has been assigned to the wrong owner(s).
Substitute RegistrationSubstitute registration may be requested when [1] Your vehicle’s registration is lost, stolen or damaged and you want to replace it.
Street Rod TagsTo be registered as a Street Rod vehicle, your vehicle must be a passenger vehicle or truck (with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less): be 25 calendar years old or older and must have been substantially altered, remodeled or remanufactured from the manufacturers original design.
A vehicle registered as a Street Rod cannot be used for general daily transportation, or primarily for the transportation of passengers or property on highways. It can only be used in exhibitions, club activities, parades, tours, occasional transportation and similar uses. They will not be used for employment, transportation to and from employment or school, or for commercial purposes. A trailer does not qualify for historic registration.
Chesapeake Bay Commemorative PlateThe Chesapeake Bay plate fees goes to the Chesapeake Bay Trust, a non-profit organization that works to restore our shorelines, teach Maryland students, green neighborhoods and clean-up local rivers and streams [cbtrust.org] * 410-974-2941.
Assistance w/ Writ of MandamusA writ of mandamus is an order from a superior court compelling a government officer to perform mandatory duties correctly. For example, a writ of mandamus may be used to have a title for a car issued when there are no other options available.
Non-Certified Driving and Motor Vehicle RecordThere is a fee for a non-certified driving record. In general, it means that the record does not need to be placed into an envelope; sealed and stamped for security to ensure that neither you nor anyone else can tamper with the information inside.
